55 New bond street
Fenwick approached JWD to design the new entrance, reception and common parts of this 21,000sq ft office behind a period façade. The project included re-planning the core, a new staircase and WCs.
The narrow reception, only 2.8 metres wide, was once the access road for deliveries to Fenwick’s Department Store. In this scheme JWD carves out every pocket of available space and brings it into play. A new geometry defines a square space centred on the lifts just big enough for seating and a glass and steel staircase replaces the old stair in a new position. The tapered desk is placed at the front of the reception beneath natural light from a slim light well. At the back of the long space, JWD has designed reflective panels to frame a bronze sculpture and provide the illusion of a brighter space beyond.
To gain the maximum sense of space and light, JWD uses the same limestone for wall, floor and desk. Opposite the desk an illuminated wall of stone-coloured polished plaster provides reflections. Polished surfaces predominate alongside honed and riven stone, bronze, leather, and gold organza laminated between mirror and glass.
